What Did We Wear Before There Were 80s Costumes

It is always fascinating to see, as we get older, just how fast time flies. Here we are, another year is almost half gone, and soon we will be searching for another Halloween costume for Halloween, or other celebration. Have you ever thought about what we wore before there were 80s costumes? Back then, when we were in the eighties, what were our costumes? Did we realize, that our way of dressing ourselves then, would be changed into costumes we only wear during party time, now?

Remember those silly leg warmers? What was the purpose for those things? Yes, the argument can be made that they served to keep the legs of those, who exercised, warm. This is understandable but, these articles usually fell down to the ankles during the first five minutes of a workout. So, the question remains, how did they keep the legs warm? A person would spend most of an hour just trying to keep up the leg warmers. Hey, maybe that is how they kept the legs warm!

What about tight, leather pants, and tight, stone-washed jeans? The large, overwhelming, confusion here, is how in the world did anyone get those things onto their bodies? Was there a requirement that you had to soak in a vat of butter, have a friend get a good distance from you, as he or she held a pair of these jeans or pants, run as hard as your little legs could, and taking a leap of faith, hopefully slide into these contraptions? Once you had them on, did you need to carry around an oxygen tank, just so you could breathe?

Shell suits! Every decade has it’s silly piece of clothing and the shell suit makes the ultimate identifiable 80s costume.Oh my god, was this the idea of a paratrooper, who jumped out of a perfectly good plane, while he was intoxicated? Did he have the absurd notion (and think it was an epiphany), as he was free falling, to create a set of pants that would be used more by the break dancing crowd, than anyone else? Did people actually run around thinking, “I must have a shell suit made of parachute material.”

Fingerless, lace gloves. Yes, it is true, that bikers, and ice fisherman, probably need leather, fingerless gloves to have a good grip as they ride, or use their fishing rods. This is understandable, as they need their fingers unobstructed so they can shift gears or reel in their fishing rods. But, what is the purpose of fingerless gloves made of lace? So far as is known, lace may have a gripping power for about all of two seconds, but other than that, what good are they? Well whatever use they may or not have been they were the height of fashion in the 80s and a must accessory for your 80s costume.

Slap bracelets.An absolute must for your 80s costume. It is true that the world probably had a big shortage of bracelets, and a person decided, it was time to fill the world with their presence. You never know, the state of the nation could have been changed  had enough bracelets been passed around. With these bracelets all you had to do was sneak up on unsuspecting individuals, slap a bracelet on their wrists, and be gone before they realized what had occurred. What would we have done without these gadgets?

Whether we believe it or not, the following generation is going to make fun of our little idiosyncrasies. Back when we were living in the eighties, we wore clothing from the fifties and sixties as our 80s costumes. Heck, in the nineties, we used clothing from the seventies. It is just the way things are done.

The point being, do not worry, it is all in fun. It has been said that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Well, if flattery is being performed, then several people have done a very good job. Enjoy your life, and the 80s costumes which are in it.

Thoughts And Ideas About 80s Cartoons

The cartoon world still consists today of youngsters on a Saturday morning, being glued to the television – mesmerized by all the colour, action and cool heroes. It was the same with the 80s cartoons.

If you were a child watching cartoons in those days, you became a Smurf, you rooted for The Incredible Hulk as he fought off evil and sided with the Transformers. Your world consisted of cars flying, people soaring through the air, miraculous escapes and unimaginable strength. Your characters became your friends and your sword slew the villains. You wore their costumes and you got their toys. It helped spur on your imagination and gave you the power to overcome life’s little knocks.

Of course the 80s decade was a time of excess and extravagance. Many industries exploded with increased production worldwide, and much the same happened in the cartoon industry. It became more exportable and we were exposed to different styles, face shapes and better-animated features. The story lines improved as time marched through the eighties. One only needs to look at The Bionic Six to see this, and of course to an all time favourite for many viewers: Robotech.

The 80s was also a time when disputes broke out whether shows were to be aired in the morning compared with shows aimed at a slightly older audience, which would work better early afternoons. We can guess who won: they both did, because today you can find dedicated cartoon channels, which will entertain your child or teenager the whole day.

This brings us to our next point. Were the 80′s cartoons too violent? This is obviously up for debate and will take volumes to reach some sort of consensus. The fact of the matter is, our 80s cartoons were entertaining and brilliant to say the least. Many people will say they had substance and were so popular that movies, series, toys, books, clothes and many other spin-offs were generated from that decade. Some people are also of the opinion that when it comes to violence, parents can regulate what their children see; after all, they are not adults yet and cannot make that decision for themselves.

On a lighter note though, there were funny cartoons that made children roll around with laughter. This in itself was a fantastic tool to uplift a sad kid or make someone feel better while they were in hospital. The 80s cartoons were special in that their story lines had quality content and a sense of realism which you have difficulty finding in today’s cartoons.

Take for instance Duck Tales. Here you had Donald Duck and his three nephews Huey, Dewey and Louie. Throw in their billionaire Uncle Scrooge and see how the writers came up with fantastic adventures to give even adults a chuckle or two. Kids loved them and were thoroughly entertained, especially when new and interesting characters were added ever so often.

For the girls, apart from many others, Thundercat was extremely popular. This hybrid feline race who were living on the 3rd Earth because of some magical destruction of their home planet – Thundera, gave us lots of action and helped many a shy girl come out of her shell when she would watch this series.

The 80s Cartoons That We Remember Today

The best part of the weekend growing up was rushing to the television and seeing what the cartoons were and where they would take me. 80s cartoons were innocent and all had a great message to live by. Good always triumphed over evil and I knew I would not hear any language that was inappropriate. There are many memorable cartoons of the 1980′s.

Smurfs: Which Smurf did you identify with? Papa Smurf had his hands full when it came to the antics of all that was smurfing around in the 80s cartoon that turned everyone blue and wanting to collect all the figurines of their favourite characters. Each week there was an issue involving one of the Smurfs. It was solved with love while fighting off Gargamel in the process or his annoying cat.

G. I. Joe: Combat to arms, this all American hero set the waves into action when the plastic action figure came to life in his own 80s cartoon. Kids all over the country played with their dolls each Saturday morning while watching GI Joe save the world in one form or another in mortal combat with the enemy. Who knows how many young people joined the military with the thought of this figurine in the back of their minds.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: One of the huge hit cartoons of the 80s. Four turtles that ate pizza and lived in the sewer while learning wicked skills from their rat mentor; this is the premise of this iconic cartoon in the 80s that made its way onto backpacks and lunch boxes across the country. It sparked the desire to learn martial arts again and showed that teenagers could fight for justice too, even if they were turtles.

Thundercats: Cats as super heroes with a mythology theme. This is the premise of the popular show that felt like you were getting educated while watching it. It was an interesting twist to fighting old age crime and put cats on the map before the infamous Broadway musical. One of the more popular cartoons of the 80s.

Spiderman and His Amazing Friends: If you get bit by a spider in high school you then become part of a crime fighting group. With the help of his friends, Spiderman found a way to fight the bad guy each week in this popular 80s cartoon. He still however had time to pine over his wannabe girlfriend while taking great photos for the school paper.

Inspector Gadget: Don’t you just wish you had the right tool for everything? This was not a problem for Inspector Gadget. Even though they did not always turn out to be useful he had them. It was fun to tune in each week and see what he would come up with next.

There are many other top 80s cartoons that come to mind such as Teddy Ruxpin, Strawberry Shortcake and He-Man Masters of the Universe. All were iconic and honest and you did not have to worry about what your kids were watching. Many of these 80s cartoons are still around at different second hand shops or online for you to view. Some stations even feature 80s cartoons on cable channels for you and your entire family to enjoy.

How The 80s Icons Influenced Our Lives
Let us first have a quick English lesson. The word icon originally meant a picture, image or other representation. It can also mean in the more modern context, a symbol that stands for a file in a computer. For instance, you could have a picture of a flower that if clicked will open a certain program. It can also mean a resemblance or analogy of an object. For decades, adoring fans have made their favorite films star or sports celebrity their icons, especially the 80s icons.
An icon lives a life much like a fish would in a fishbowl. They are constantly in the news and are bombarded with questions and annoying flashlights- the paparazzi are everywhere scrutinizing their every breath. It is their sense of fashion, their mannerisms, and their philanthropy that makes them shine their light in our world. We want to identify with them and want to wear the same clothes and look the same and some people go to great lengths to achieve this.
The 80′s were a fun filled decade. It was a time of fashion experiments and extremes. It was a time where disco beats were in every home and in every car. Who can forget David Bowie with his outrageous make up and extreme costumes singing “with your long blonde hair and your eyes of blue, the only thing I ever got from you was sorrow”.

Nevertheless, deep down they are normal people who have the same stresses and pressures as many of us. His band made some great music, which is undeniable, and they took everything they possibly could from the eighties. Kelly Osbourne has also become an icon among her peers and is systematically working on her slice of fame.
Then there are those iconic movies, which made the eighties come alive. The actors were already icons in their own rights, like for instance the best movie in 1985 – Out of Africa. Meryl Streep dazzled us playing a farm owner under the great blue sky and wide open spaces of Africa. She single handily brought Africa into our homes like never before. Lets us also not forget about Sissy Spacek in her 1980 movie – Coal Miner’s Daughter. Her brilliant acting made a huge impression on us and she received an Oscar for best actress that year.
To savor the best for last is in this instance an understatement. No one can ever forget the most loved person in the 80′s and beyond. His name is none other than Michael Jordan the undeniable hero of basketball. He burst onto the scene making basketball so popular that it is now seen as the ultimate sport in many teenagers’ minds. He became America’s most beloved superstar and one of the 80s icons whose fame will live on forever.
